Wanna know how I created my own PAID internship as a high school senior? 

Hi! I’m Swetha from the rebel base and this is your daily dose of d’Skills Dispatch.

First -- I asked myself: What skills do I want to learn? 

In the age of the internet (and now AI) we can learn anything. The first thing that came to my mind when I was still a senior in high school was game development. In my pink bedroom with the fluorescent lights beaming into my skull, I took the free course offered on Unity. It was SO SO addicting. Even when my power grid went out in the winter of '21, I kept on going. 

By the end of 1 month, I had a portfolio of projects ready to go.

The next step was immersing myself into as many communities as I possibly could and taking ADVANTAGE of that network. 

One of my friends, who was a fellow Kode With Klossy alum, started a game dev internship (coincidentally) at a local startup. 

I DMed her saying I was interested in what she was doing. She gave me the contact for the CEO, I showed her my portfolio, and I got a $20 per hour internship. This was the first time I EVER made money, and I created this opportunity myself by being proactive.

Our sprinter Kate was already extraordinary. But we equipped her with the knowledge to build her own d’skills.

What happened next?

“I collaborated with a local eye doctor business to raise awareness about chronic dry eyes, which I struggle with due to frequent screen usage as a Digital Native. Using my skills in 3D and mixed media, I created an awareness video featuring wearable art using an extended metaphor about geckos. My project aimed to showcase the potential of art in helping businesses and spreading awareness about health issues. I could apply my art skills to helping businesses of all sorts — the only limit is my creativity!”

Continuing my story:

I got my second internship as a college freshman by dialing up one of my clients that I did a brand deal for. Then again, this was created by me because they weren't hiring interns. but because they loved what I did, they couldn't say no.
